Preschool Course of Study

Religion: Classroom “Jesus Time”: provides the opportunity for children to hear of God’s love for them and teaches Jesus Christ as friend and Savior through stories, filmstrips, videos, songs, weekly chapel, drama, flannel board, chalk talks, and other methods and materials.

Art: Children grow through various stages of art development, from the scribbling stages to the more refined forms of art. They have the opportunity to experiment and express themselves with various materials such as clay, paint, crayons, paste, glue, paper, wood, boxes, fabric, and the like. They learn shapes such as dots, circles, squares, and the like. The children will be exposed to a rich “art” vocabulary. Our focus is on the process and not the product.

 

Children’s Literature: Children are exposed to various types of literature through story-time and listening to tapes, records, and cassettes while simultaneously looking at books individually and in small groups. Students also visit Faith’s library on a weekly basis.

Verbal Expression: The children learn to express themselves in formal (Show and Tell) and informal class discussions. Interactions between teacher/pupil and pupil/pupil are encouraged.

Music: Creating and listening to music, rhythm, and interpretive movement are incorporated into the program.

Physical Education and Health: Young children need opportunities to explore, enhance, and challenge their capabilities. Our physical education program helps the children develop large and small motor muscle skills, confidence in themselves, and gives them the opportunity to play cooperatively with children to enhance their understanding of a healthy life.

Science: The children are exposed to the beauty and intrigue of God’s creation through nature and science-related lessons that are designed to teach the children to be curious about their discoveries.

Social Studies: The preschool program includes awareness and appreciation of the community and others around them. Various lessons and field trips are utilized to teach and enhance social concepts.

Mathematics: Children acquire math concepts through activities with materials and interactions with staff and peers.

Show and Tell: Show and Tell is the only time that the children are encouraged to bring from home their favorite toy. This is an experience that fosters verbal communication, expression, and the building of self-confidence. Children are encouraged to talk about their “treasure.” The school is not responsible for any personal items that may be damaged, lost, or stolen.

Kindergarten through 8th Grade Course of Study

 

Religion: Bible study, doctrine, church history, chapel, prayer, and memory verses. Faith’s religion curriculum is based on the Holy Scriptures as the  inspired Word of God which reveals God to be the Triune God: the Father, who has created us and all things; the Son, who has redeemed us and all people; and the Holy Spirit, who seeks to sanctify us and all people by working faith in hearts through Law and Gospel. The curriculum approaches the Christian faith from a decidedly Lutheran viewpoint within a catechetical framework: the truths of Scriptures.

The Religion curriculum at Faith use a curriculum which is published by Concordia Publishing House. This curriculum is based on weekly Old and New Testament Bible Stories that incorporate weekly memory verses.” The curriculum is Christ-centered so that students will have optimal opportunity to grow in their relationship of faith and life with God.”  Every Wednesday the entire school gathers in the church for a weekly chapel service. Parents and family are invited and encouraged to share in worship.

Language Arts:  Reading, grammar, literature, composition, spelling, handwriting, speaking, and creative dramatics. This curriculum integrates reading comprehension, grammar and writing skills. These basic standards will help improve academic abilities across subject  areas. Students will practice with online assignments as well as written ones.

• Reading: Kindergarten through Second Grade uses phonics-based instruction with emphasis on fluent oral reading, comprehension, critical thinking, and writing.  The program helps students build vocabulary to broaden the students writing and reading skills. Technology is used to enhance and enrich students’ learning process.

• Seventh and Eighth Grade is challenged through texts that offer an anthology of literature using a theme approach. Students learn the literary elements, language, and vocabulary as related to the selection and use various types of writing activities to complete the objectives of each lesson.

Grammar: Our grammar curriculum includes the language art skills that encompass the major areas of listening, speaking, writing, and reading. Our students become competent and fluent users of the language as they develop an understanding and appreciation of its grammatical structure which leads to thoughtful and critical readers, independent thinkers, articulate speakers, and intelligent purposeful listeners.

Spelling: The spelling curriculum is the intentional instruction of phonic awareness as it relates to the English spelling of words with the use of rules. Spelling is taught across the curriculum and builds vocabulary in every subject. Strategies are taught that develop spelling success in everyday writing.

 

Mathematics:

Arithmetic, including fundamental operations, general mathematics, algebra, and problem-
solving.
Math is a key element in educational success. To achieve mastery we use a traditional approach to instruction. Faith begins with a solid understanding of number sense and basic math skills in the lower grades. This focused instruction and individual help in basic math provide the foundation for word problems, critical thinking, advanced math computations, and solving problems using different strategies.

Science and Health: Science and Health: Life, physical, and earth sciences. We teach that “God is the Creator of the Universe and the Originator of its order, reason, and reality, and that science is one way for man to control and master the physical world for the benefit of mankind.” Students learn to enjoy, explore, investigate, understand and observe God’s World through the textbook and through hands-on experiments.

Health includes safety, manners, developing and choosing good health habits. This shows that we can be a healthier child of God by the choices that are made in caring for the bodies that God has given us. The topics covered includes body systems, senses, self-concept, exercise, substance abuse prevention, sexuality, hygiene, nutrition, safety, and AIDS education.

Social Studies: Geography, citizenship, current events, history, and map skills. Our social studies curriculum follows a progressive theme beginning with the neighborhood and then moving to the city, state, country, and then introducing the eastern and western hemispheres. In learning about the areas that make up the world; cultures, customs, heritage, language, and geography are introduced to show the difference that God has placed in the world that the student lives in. These concepts allow the students to be better-informed citizens and active members of the community.

Florida History: (4th Grade)
Our Florida History curriculum allows the students to become more knowledgeable, active, and proud of their State through use the use of textbook information and current events.

Civics: (7th Grade)
Civics skills, citizenship values, principles of democracy, American Government, American Economic System, and challenges in today’s world.

The American Civics curriculum is based on the following goals:
• to provide students with a thorough understanding of our nation’s system of government
• to instill in students the qualities of good citizenship that will enable them to put their knowledge into action
• to provide students with the skills they need to participate fully in a democratic society
• to familiarize students with the contemporary issues that face the United States, so that they will make wise decisions on which the nation’s future depends

American History: (8th Grade)

Geography, Economics, Government, Citizenship, Science, Technology, Societies and Culture, Constitutional Heritage and global Relations. Our American History curriculum includes such themes as geography, economics, government, citizenship, science, technology, society culture, constitutional heritage, and global relations. Also learning how these topics in history affect the present and the future.

Technology/Typing: This course covers a wide range of skills including computer basics, digital literacy, keyboarding, computer applications, and digital citizenship.

Physical Education: Physical fitness, team and individual game skills, and lifetime sports. Our goal is that the students will achieve a level of personal fitness and skills that will allow them to live a healthier life and better serve their Lord through individual personal fitness, group games, and team sports.

Music: Appreciation, theory, participation, and singing. The music curriculum shows that music is a form of expression for personal enjoyment and a form of worship and praise to our heavenly Father. Our goal is to provide the understanding of singing, playing, moving, listening, improvising, reading, composing, and comparing music to enhance their worship and personal life.

Art: Appreciation and practice with various media. Our art curriculum teaches that God provides many avenues in which to express ourselves and our faith in the form of art. The expression can be seen in the understanding of line, shape, color, pattern, texture, painting, sculpturing, design, and art appreciation.

Grading Scale
Grades will be composed of the following components: The Academic Grade- indicates the individual progress of a student in relation to class standards as set by the curriculum. Grading is based on the percentage scale described above.

A+ = 97-100%
A = 95-96%
A- = 90-94%
B+ = 87-89%
B = 85-86%
B- = 80-84%
C+ = 77-79%
C = 75-76%
C- = 70-74%
D+ = 67-69%
D = 65-66%
D- = 60-64%
F = 59% and Below

The Effort Grade- indicates whether or not a student is working up to his/her own ability level, (Good grades with low effort indicate there is room for improvement; acceptable grades with high effort should be appreciated). In grades K-8, grades are available online through the school portal.
